The questions I wish to investigate in my project:
How is storytelling used in modern film?
What makes a good story?
Can I learn techniques from past directors?
Is VFX taking over film?
Is VFX improving or degrading film?
Do films influence society?
These questions above I want to take forward into my dissertation. One to be the primary question and another to be the secondary one for the next stage of the project. I considered each question with it's merits, differences and consequences.
My first draft question was " How is storytelling used through modern film, with the latest VFX. Is VFX improving or degrading the modern film and what impacts on society does this have?"
within this it would answer "what makes a good film?" "Is VFX Improving or degrading?" and "Do films influence society"
Sadly this question is asking too much as we need to go more in depth.
Therefore because I believe that storytelling is core to making a good film and the other aspects of film e.g. lighting, sound, and VFX can improve it further. I must revise this question and have it's core subject to be STORYTELLING!
So with this new question
"Innate to the human
condition, storytelling has evolved through oral, written, to visual
techniques. Can analysis show how good storytelling verisimilitude is being
delivered today through film and why do we still crave these stories?"
I'm looking at the origins of storytelling and how it has adapted and how it's affecting modern film. Combined with the human condition being a society part of why do we like stories?
To start this I will need to find all key texts to do with storytelling and cinematography.
I have initially gone to the previous book which I have studied from to improve my film work " Film directing, shot by shot : visualizing from concept to screen" "by Steven D.Katz
I went to this book because it shows every process in making a film, but has a section on story and storyboard. This can link to my dissertation because of the fact it's move the story from text to the visual concept
Other sources of information can come from film reviews and magazines which will be able to get quotes which state opinions.
